From near and far, they come to learn

Latino Reporter
From San Diego’s Point Loma to the home of the Red Sox, journalism students from colleges nationwide are getting a taste of a real-world newsroom as staff reporters for The Latino Reporter.
The NAHJ convention newspaper features 20 students reporting out of Room 113 of the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. A team of professional journalists are working with students as they cover breaking news, current events, the convention and South Florida life.
From the West Coast hail Serena Daniels and Connie Llanos, who both graduated in May from California State University, Northridge. Daniels started her journalism career in 2002 as editor in chief of the Los Angeles Valley College student newspaper, and Llanos, mother of 2-year-old Luci, was features editor in the spring semester at Cal State Northridge’s Daily Sun Dial.
The West Coast also is home to Willie Bans of San Diego State University, who calls the Daily Aztec, where he will serve as managing editor in the fall, his classroom. From San Jose State University is San Jose Mercury News clerk Jessica Chavez, who says she has wanted to become a journalist since seventh grade.
Joining Chavez this summer at the Mercury News is Javier Hernandez of Harvard University, who will work as an intern.
Arriving from Texas is Analiz Gonzalez of Baylor University and Rubén Carrete of St. Mary’s University.
Denver is home to Matt Gunn of the Metropolitan State College of Denver and Erika Usui from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
From the Big Apple are Aisha Al-Muslim of Herbert H. Lehman College and Matt Mireles of Columbia University, and from upstate New York is Christine Show of Syracuse University. From Chicago is Liliana Esquivel of Columbia College Chicago, who graduated in May, and from the U.S. capital is Moises Mendoza of Georgetown University.
The staff also includes South Florida locals Daysi Calavia-Lopez of Miami-Dade College, and Alejandra Cancino and Adrianna Rodriguez of the University of Florida.
Photographers for the Latino Reporter are Southern California residents Reina Santa Cruz and Kelly Rivas of the University of La Verne, and Joey Anchondo of Seattle University.
